Dixie entered the Arena in her red pick up truck with a trailor towed behind. She turned the ignition off and got out to go register. She walked over to the woman who was doing the registration form. The woman looked up hello what will you be registering for today Dixie replied Barrel Racing. The woman nodded Name, age, horses name please and I need 5 dollars for the registration fee. Dixie gave the woman 5 dollars my name is Dixie Canyon I'm 18 and my horses name is Spirit Reborn Spirit for short. Thank you the woman said your number 5 in the competition Dixie nodded and got her number. She went back to the trailor and opened it leading Spirit out. She patted his neck and got the saddle and saddle pad out of the trailor along with the bridle. She saddled him quickly and mounted taking him to the warm up area. She let him walk in circles to calm him down then nudged him into a lope the switched leads. After she warmed him up she waited for her name to be called. Dixie was so nervous soon her name was called. Dixie breathed shakily as she walked Spirit to the runway. The gun was shot and Spirit bolted she turned the first barrel with ease and the second now then there was the last barrel Dixie kicked him harder he flew around the third barrel. Dixie kept kicking him as much as she could Spirit was flying toward the finish the clock timed out at 13 seconds. Dixie slowed Spirit to a complete stop her heart pounding she was breathing hard along with Spirit. She walked him around cooloing him down and then lead him back to the trailor and unsaddled him and took him to the water hose and hosed him down to help cool him off then she scraped the extra water off and tied him to the trailor. She pulled out her lawn chair from within the truck and sat down. She watched several others race some beginners other intermediat to Expert. Dixie was here for fun not for the prize I mean she wanted it but she liked competition. Soon the Barrel Racing Competion was over they announced the other winners the came 2nd and 1st. Dixie held held her breath and crossed her fingers. The speaker came on again Second place goes to there was a slight pause DIXIE CANYON. Dixie was shocked and umped out of her lawn chair she hugged spirits neck and danced a happy dance. She went and received her reward which was 50 bucks and a smaller buckle than first place. She went back to the trailor and loaded Spirit and shut the trailor door and got in the truck and rode home to tell her family the good news.
